Grahame
White Fly infestation on tomatoes

The garden is shaded with 50% shade cloth about 2.2 meters above. Have tried Lybacid, Roger, Lanosan, Maverick, Tomato Dust, Soapy Water and a mild mix of Lime Sulpher to no avail. Thank You

Answer: Dear Grahame,

White Fly can be a real problem on tomatoes and needs to be controlled as soon as they are detected. Natrasoap is an excellent product which can be used to control white fly. It is a low toxic soap based spray which will suffocate and dry out this particular pest.

Ideally tomatoes should be grown in full sun. I am not sure why you are growing them under shade cloth? At this time of the year as we are approaching the colder weather, it is time to remove any of the non producing plants and discard them. You can certainly sow more tomato seeds in late winter/early summer ready for your next year’s crop.
