I have a potted Palm in my well lite and ventilated bathroom that has white mold growing on the top of the soil {good quality potting mix was used}also at times there are black insects that fly out of the soil what could this be and how do I fix this Than

Answer: Dear Cheryl,

It does sound like the potting mix is too wet which is attracting fungus gnats( that are interested in the organic matter in the mix) and causing a mould to appear on the surface of the mix.

The palm will soon begin to suffer unless you can improve the drainage. It would be a good idea to take the palm outside to a shady spot where the soil can dry out. Make sure it is not sitting in a saucer of water. Keep the plant in this situation until it improves. You can put the plant back in your bathroom.

Now that the weather is cooling down, be sure to regulate the amount of water you give to the plant. Before watering, check the soil. If it is wet, don’t water. Only water when the soil dries out.
