Barbara
My cydads have yellow spots on their leaves.

They are in the ground but only receive afternoon sun. I give them seasol and powerfeed fortnightly.

Answer: Dear Barbara,
Cycads can be attacked by pests such as thrips and scale. They are both sap sucking insects that feed on the leaves of plants resulting in yellow spots where they have fed. Scale can be controlled by an application of PestOil when the pest is first detected. This product blocks the breathing pores of insects causing suffocation and rapid death, Be sure to apply the product to both the top and underneath the fronds of the cycad. Soft brown scale is active at this time of year so you will need to spray now, repeat again in January, and again in February to keep this pest population under control.
You are taking the correct action by keeping your cycads well watered and well fertilised so they remain healthy and are able to cope with the hot summer months ahead.
